Tutorial 2: Offset leap

3. Cutting the audio track

RelCut markers

To cut the audio track, AV Adjust provides the marker kind RelCut (Relative Cut). Relative cuts modifies the position of the audio track by the correction value specified here. This value applies as follows:

  • A positive correction value (>0) cuts out the given number of frames from the sound track. The sound is shortened at this position and appears thereafter earlier.
  • A negative correction value (<0) delays the sound track by the appropriate frame count. The sound is played thereafter later.

In our example file, the audiotrack must be delayed between the second and third hammer blow. So move the current position there and set a relative cut marker by clicking the RelCut button. The marker settings, as already known from the Spline marker, are indicated:

Estimate at first again the present time difference between picture and sound, convert this into frames and write the value into the "± Frm" input field. Now the sound is shifted by this correction value starting from the marker. See this for oneself by a preview.

If the synchronous run not became better, or maybe even got worse, there can be two causes: Either you have estimated the time difference not properly. Therefore here is betrayed that a half second, i.e. about 12 Frames, is a good start value. Try it with this.

Plus or minus?

If this has not helped, actually only the sign can be the reason. Do you have considered that we want to delay the soundtrack and, therefore, need a negative correction value? Thus, write "-12" into the input field.

Now the sound should fit nearly everywhere quite well. However, it can happen that you hear, nevertheless, the third hammer blow still too early. This occurs if you have set the cut marker a little bit "too late".
